A gunman opened fire on a church today killing multiple people and wounding others around 11:30 a.m. authorities said..
The shooting happened on Sunday morning at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs..
officers on the scene said the gunman is dead and there is no active threat in the area, KSAT News reports. Authorities have not released details on the gunman. Sheriff Joe Tackitt told Wilson County News there were “multiple casualties and multiple fatalities.” Neighbors in the area told local media outlets around 50 people usually attend service on Sunday.
A spokesman for the FBI’s San Antonio field office confirmed that FBI are on the scene, CNN reports.
Texas governor Greg Abbott tweeted his condolences to everyone affected by the tragedy. “Our prayers are with all who were harmed by this evil act,” he posted. “Our thanks to law enforcement for their response.”
