Teen Arrested After Throwing Drink At Officer During Anti-ICE Student Protest

An 18-year-old North Carolina student was taken into custody after reportedly throwing a drink at a police officer during a student-led protest against ICE activity.

According to authorities, Emily Cervantes Ramos was arrested after officers observed her in a now-viral video allegedly tossing a large fountain drink at a Kannapolis Police officer. She was pursued, brought to the ground, and handcuffed immediately after the incident.

The confrontation occurred around noon on Friday, when approximately 75 students from A.L. Brown High School walked out of class to protest reports of ICE presence in nearby Charlotte. The demonstration took place in downtown Kannapolis, about 30 minutes outside the city.

Police responded “to ensure everyone’s safety,” officials said, noting that most students were demonstrating peacefully until the situation escalated.

Footage circulating online shows a white male officer standing on a sidewalk while several individuals shouted at him, using profanity and yelling as he remained silent. The video shows Ramos approaching from behind and striking him with a drink.

Ramos was later charged with assault on a government official and two counts of resisting public officers. She has since been released.

A GoFundMe campaign—now removed—was created following her arrest. The fundraiser claimed the situation intensified when an officer “intervened aggressively, snatching a bullhorn from a young girl and dragging her to the ground.” It described the incident as “one of the most distressing things many of us have ever witnessed,” asserting that Ramos had been peacefully expressing her rights.
