Ohio: Body-camera video has been released in connection with an alleged assault on two corrections officers at the Trumbull County Correctional Institution, an incident that led to a $1 million bond and new felony charges against an inmate already serving a lengthy prison sentence.
According to wfmj.com Joseph Hunter, 38, is accused of seriously injuring two corrections officers during an incident inside the prison on March 14, 2025.
The video, recorded by corrections officers’ body cameras, shows the confrontation that prosecutors say resulted in significant injuries to the officers.
Authorities have not released detailed information about the extent of those injuries beyond what is outlined in the indictment.
Hunter has been indicted in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court on two counts of felonious assault, each carrying a repeat violent offender specification.
That specification allows for enhanced penalties based on prior violent felony convictions.
On Monday, a judge set Hunter’s bond at $1 million. Court records indicate that following the incident, Hunter was transferred from Trumbull County Correctional Institution to the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown.
Hunter is currently serving a 32-year prison sentence stemming from prior convictions in Lucas County for involuntary manslaughter, attempted murder, felonious assault, and aggravated robbery — all first-degree felonies.
Those convictions originated from a Nov. 21, 2011 robbery at a Toledo convenience store.
During that incident, the store clerk fatally shot Hunter’s accomplice. Although Hunter did not fire the fatal shot, he was convicted and sentenced in connection with his accomplice’s death.
The release of the body-camera footage comes as the case moves through the court system.
Prosecutors have not indicated whether the video will be used as evidence at trial, and no trial date has been set.
