The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is reviewing the actions of one of its officers after a video surfaced online showing the officer threatening to kill a 17-year-old driver during a traffic stop.
The video, which has circulated widely on social media, captures the officer repeatedly yelling at the teen and stating, “I will f—ing kill you,” during the encounter. The traffic stop occurred earlier this month on the city’s east side.
According to information released by police, the officer initiated the stop after claiming the vehicle smelled like marijuana. The officer ordered the teen, identified as Trevion Taylor, to exit the car. When the teen questioned the reason for the command, the officer escalated the situation with verbal threats.
Police officials later stated the stop took place in an area where officers had been responding to activity related to a nearby protest and reports involving juveniles and firearms. No weapon was found on the teen during the stop.
Taylor’s family has condemned the officer’s actions, calling the threat unnecessary and traumatic. His mother has accused police of racial profiling and said the incident highlights the need for better de-escalation training, particularly when officers interact with minors.
The video has sparked widespread outrage online, with many viewers criticizing the officer’s conduct and questioning the department’s use of force and communication tactics. Community members and advocacy groups have called for transparency and accountability from IMPD.
IMPD Response
IMPD confirmed the officer was wearing a body-worn camera and that the incident is currently under internal review. In a statement, the department said the language used in the video does not align with its professional standards.
At this time, IMPD has not announced whether the officer has been placed on administrative leave or if disciplinary action will follow. The department says it will release additional information once the review is complete.
