A tragic shooting at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket on Monday afternoon left multiple people dead and several others critically injured during a high school hockey game, authorities said.
The incident unfolded just before 2:30 p.m. on Monday, February 16, when gunfire erupted in the stands during a boys’ hockey matchup between local teams.
Players and spectators fled in panic as shots rang out inside the packed arena.
Police and emergency responders quickly arrived on scene and located multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
Three people — including the suspected shooter — were pronounced dead. Three additional victims were transported to Rhode Island Hospital in critical condition.
Authorities identified the suspected gunman as 56-year-old Robert K. Dorgan, who also went by the name Roberta Esposito. Investigators said the shooter died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at the arena.
Officials described the violence as a targeted, family-related incident. According to law enforcement, preliminary evidence suggests the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute, though the investigation remains ongoing.
In a brief statement outside the Pawtucket Police Department, a woman identifying herself as the shooter’s daughter confirmed that her father was responsible for the attack. “He shot my family, and he’s dead now,” she said, adding that her father had struggled with mental health issues and was “very sick.”
The victims’ identities have not yet been formally released as authorities work to notify next of kin. Investigators believe at least two relatives of the shooter were among those struck by gunfire.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes inside the arena as children and parents scrambled for cover. Some players reportedly retreated to locker rooms and barricaded doors until police secured the building.
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee expressed heartbreak over the tragedy and thanked first responders for their swift response. Local officials said counseling resources are being made available to students, families, and community members affected by the violence.
Authorities continue to investigate and are asking anyone with additional information or video footage from inside the arena to contact police.
