A shocking case has emerged in Palm Coast, Florida, where a 20-year-old college student, Anne Mae Demegillo, has been arrested in connection with the death of her newborn child.
Authorities say the woman allegedly gave birth alone in her bathroom and left the infant to drown in the toilet.
According to police reports, Demegillo delivered the baby while sitting on her toilet at her home. Investigators believe the child was born alive but was subsequently left in the toilet, leading to the infant’s death.
After the incident, authorities allege that Demegillo placed the baby in a duffel bag and concealed it in a closet.
Later the same day, she reportedly attended her college classes and performed in a local theater production.
Officials say that later that night, Demegillo allegedly buried the newborn in a shallow grave in her backyard. Authorities were alerted after receiving messages from the woman claiming that she had been secretly pregnant and had given birth.
Deputies investigated and were led to the grave where the infant was buried.
The 20-year-old has been charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child, and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are continuing to gather evidence to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
Local community members expressed shock over the events, describing the situation as “heartbreaking and unimaginable.” Mental health experts emphasize that situations involving concealed pregnancies can be complex, often requiring awareness, support, and intervention to prevent tragedies.
This case highlights the importance of education, access to reproductive health care, and mental health resources for young women, particularly college students who may face pressure and isolation.
Anne Mae Demegillo is currently in custody, and further updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
