YUBA CITY, Calif. — A Yuba City police officer shot a suspect after authorities say the man swung a shovel at officers during a chaotic encounter late last month.
The incident, which was captured on body-worn and surveillance cameras, is now under investigation.
According to the Yuba City Police Department, officers responded on February 26, 2026, to reports of a man behaving erratically in a residential neighborhood. Callers told dispatchers the individual was running naked, damaging property, and allegedly assaulting a family member.
When officers arrived, they attempted to detain the suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Guillermo Figueroa. Police say the situation quickly escalated when the man resisted arrest and ignored repeated commands.
Officers initially attempted to subdue him using less-lethal methods, including a Taser and physical force, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
The confrontation moved into a backyard, where authorities say Figueroa picked up a shovel and began swinging it at officers. Video released by police appears to show the suspect advancing toward officers while holding the tool.
At that point, one officer discharged his firearm, striking the suspect at least twice, according to officials.
Figueroa was taken into custody at the scene. Officers rendered medical aid before he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was reported to be in critical condition following the shooting.
Police have not announced whether Figueroa has since been booked into jail or formally charged. As of now, no mugshot has been publicly released.
The shooting is under investigation by multiple agencies, a standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. Authorities say the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Officials have released portions of body camera footage and surveillance video in an effort to provide transparency, though the incident is likely to face further public scrutiny as investigators review the circumstances leading up to the use of deadly force.
Anyone with additional information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Yuba City Police Department.
Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
