1‑Year‑Old Killed in DUI Crash; 14‑Year‑Old Driver Identified as Mother

A tragic crash early Monday morning on Interstate 64 in Hampton has claimed the life of a 1‑year‑old child and left a community in mourning, authorities said.

According to law enforcement and family members, a 14‑year‑old girl — identified by relatives as the child’s mother was driving a sedan shortly after 2 a.m. when the vehicle veered off the interstate and struck roadside barriers.

Virginia State Police confirmed that the teenager was under the influence of alcohol, was not licensed to drive, and was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The infant was also not properly restrained in a car seat.

The child, whose name has been publicly shared by family but withheld by some news outlets, died on Thursday from injuries sustained in the collision.

State police say the teenage driver suffered serious injuries in the crash and is expected to face multiple charges, including driving under the influence, driving without a license, and failure to properly restrain a child. Additional charges may be under review as the investigation continues.

Investigators have not disclosed details about how the vehicle left the roadway or whether speed was a factor, but the involvement of alcohol and lack of safety restraints are likely to play central roles in the ongoing inquiry.

Family members expressed profound grief and heartbreak in the days following the incident, emphasizing the devastating loss of such a young life. Loved ones appealed to other young drivers to act responsibly and avoid risky decisions behind the wheel.

Local advocates and safety organizations have also called for renewed attention to teen driver safety, proper child restraints, and the dangers of underage drinking and driving. Although authorities have not yet released a full statement, Hampton residents said the crash has highlighted the need for more education and prevention efforts.

In updates provided by Virginia State Police, troopers reiterated that any incident involving impaired or unlicensed drivers — especially those resulting in deaths — will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

No court dates have been announced, and prosecutors have not released a list of formal charges as of this writing.
