A Texas jury has sentenced Tanner Horner to death for the kidnapping and murder of 7-year-old Athena Strand, bringing a tragic and widely followed case to a close more than three years after the crime.
The sentencing, delivered on May 5, 2026, followed Horner’s guilty plea to capital murder and aggravated kidnapping charges. The jury deliberated for only a few hours before determining that Horner posed a continuing threat to society and that no mitigating factors justified a life sentence instead of capital punishment.
The case dates back to November 2022 in rural Wise County, Texas, where Horner was working as a contract delivery driver for FedEx. Authorities say he abducted Athena Strand from her home while delivering a package to the property.
Athena was reported missing shortly after she disappeared. A multi-agency search effort followed, drawing national attention and widespread community support. Her body was later discovered several miles from her home, leading investigators to Horner, who ultimately confessed.
Evidence Presented in Court
