Starkville, Mississippi — A Mississippi sheriff’s deputy Lt. Darrell Holley, 44 has been fired and arrested following a physical altercation with a baseball umpire during a youth tournament game.
The confrontation occurred at Cornerstone Park in Starkville during a 14U youth baseball tournament.
According to reports, the deputy—who was serving in a coaching role during the game—became involved in a heated dispute with the game’s umpire over a call on the field.
The argument quickly escalated beyond verbal exchanges, resulting in a physical fight between the two men.
Video footage of the incident shows the altercation unfolding on the field as players, coaches, and spectators looked on.
At one point, other adults and participants became involved in the chaos before the situation was eventually brought under control.
Authorities confirmed that both individuals sustained injuries during the incident. The umpire reportedly required medical attention following the altercation.
In response to the incident, the sheriff’s office announced that the deputy has been terminated from his position. Officials also confirmed that he was taken into custody and charged in connection with the fight.
The umpire involved was likewise arrested and faces related charges.
Local law enforcement officials condemned the behavior, emphasizing that the actions were inconsistent with the standards expected of public servants.
The sheriff’s office stated that an internal review was conducted immediately after the incident, leading to the deputy’s dismissal.
