San Antonio, Texas — A Texas mother has been arrested and charged with capital murder after her two young children were found dead inside a burning vehicle in San Antonio, authorities said.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Marlene Vidal of Edinburg, Texas, was taken into custody following the discovery of the bodies on the morning of May 15, 2026.
According to the San Antonio Police Department, officers and firefighters responded to reports of a vehicle fire around 5 a.m. in a warehouse parking lot on the city’s west side. A passerby had called 911 after noticing a white SUV engulfed in flames.
Once firefighters extinguished the blaze, they discovered the bodies of two children inside the vehicle. The children are believed to be approximately 5 and 7 years old, though official identification is pending from the medical examiner’s office.
Investigators said Marlene Vidal was located near the scene and later identified herself as the children’s mother. Authorities stated that surveillance footage, witness statements, and evidence collected at the scene suggest she was involved in the incident.
Vidal was arrested shortly after and charged with capital murder of a child under 10, a charge that in Texas can carry life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty.
Officials have not released a confirmed motive. However, investigators noted that mental health issues may be a factor in the case. Law enforcement agencies are continuing to interview family members and review prior interactions involving the household.
The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services is also reportedly reviewing the case, though officials have not confirmed any prior involvement with the family.
During an initial court appearance, Vidal reportedly became emotional as the charges were read aloud. Courtroom observers and reports from local outlets described her as visibly distraught, breaking down in tears during the proceedings.
The case has deeply affected the San Antonio community and first responders. Officials emphasized the emotional toll of responding to incidents involving children.
“This is one of those cases that impacts everyone involved,” a police spokesperson said during a briefing. “Our priority is finding out exactly what happened and ensuring justice for the victims.”
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the fire and deaths. Additional updates are expected following the completion of autopsies and further forensic analysis.
