Stepmother Sentenced to 15 Years After Teen Was Allegedly Isolated and Starved for years.

APPLETON, Wis. — A Wisconsin stepmother has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading no contest to charges connected to the prolonged abuse, neglect, and confinement of her 14-year-old stepdaughter, who authorities say was found weighing just 35 pounds when she was rescued in 2025.

Melissa Goodman, 52, was sentenced in Outagamie County Circuit Court after entering no-contest pleas to charges including chronic child neglect causing great bodily harm, chronic child neglect causing emotional damage, and false imprisonment.

She will also serve 10 years of extended supervision following her prison term.

During sentencing, Goodman addressed the court and offered an apology, stating she regretted the harm caused and claimed she did not fully understand the severity of the situation until later.

The now-teenage victim delivered an emotional statement in court describing years of confinement, neglect, and emotional abuse.

She said she was isolated from family members and deprived of normal childhood experiences.

“You really ruined my childhood,” she said, according to courtroom reports. She also told the court she was kept away from relatives who could have helped her and endured years of mistreatment.

Authorities discovered the girl in August 2025 after a 911 call from her father. Emergency responders found her severely malnourished and in critical condition.

Medical staff determined she weighed approximately 35 pounds and showed signs of life-threatening complications caused by prolonged starvation and neglect.

Investigators alleged the child had been confined to a bedroom for years, monitored by a camera, and denied adequate food, medical care, education, and social contact.

Doctors later reported severe malnutrition and multiple organ complications requiring urgent treatment.

The stepmother is one of four adults charged in connection with the case. The child’s father and two other individuals remain involved in ongoing legal proceedings. Additional court dates are expected as the case continues.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the severity of the allegations and the child’s condition at the time of rescue. Authorities have described it as one of the most serious child neglect cases in the region in recent years.

Since being rescued, the victim has reportedly been receiving medical care and showing signs of recovery.
