Ye Packs Texas Stadium With More Than 61,000 Fans Despite Ongoing Controversy

Ye Packs Texas Stadium

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Ye proved his star power remains undeniable over the Fourth of July weekend, drawing more than 61,000 fans to the Alamodome in San Antonio despite weeks of controversy surrounding the performance.

The concert, Ye’s first appearance in San Antonio in more than a decade, attracted fans from across Texas and neighboring states, with thousands packing the stadium for one of the biggest hip-hop events of the holiday weekend. Despite public criticism from local officials leading up to the show, the event went forward as scheduled and became one of the largest concerts held in the city this year.

Before the concert, San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones urged city officials to reconsider hosting the performance at the taxpayer-supported venue, pointing to Ye’s history of antisemitic remarks and other controversial public statements. While several city leaders condemned the rapper’s past behavior, the concert was ultimately allowed to proceed after concerns were raised about free speech and censorship.

Once the lights came on inside the Alamodome, however, the focus shifted to the music.

Fans filled the venue as Ye delivered a career-spanning performance featuring many of his biggest hits. According to attendees, the rapper largely avoided discussing the controversy surrounding him and instead concentrated on entertaining the massive crowd.

Many concertgoers said they attended because of Ye’s influence on hip-hop, with some explaining they were able to separate the artist’s music from his personal controversies. Others described the event as a rare opportunity to see one of rap’s most influential performers live after years away from Texas stages.

The performance comes during another eventful chapter in Ye’s career. Over the past several years, the artist formerly known as Kanye West has faced widespread backlash over inflammatory comments and public behavior that led to business partnerships ending, international criticism, and canceled appearances. Although Ye has since issued public apologies and said he is working to move forward, debate surrounding his career continues.

Despite the criticism, Saturday night’s turnout demonstrated that Ye continues to command one of the largest fan bases in hip-hop. A crowd of more than 61,000 people transformed the Alamodome into one of the busiest entertainment venues in Texas over the holiday weekend, underscoring the rapper’s enduring ability to attract audiences.

Whether viewed as a controversial figure or one of the most influential artists of his generation, Ye once again showed that his name remains one of the biggest draws in music.
