A deadly shooting spree in East St. Louis, Illinois has left an entire family devastated after five relatives were killed in a series of attacks across three different locations — and police say a teenage couple is now facing murder charges in connection with the tragedy.
Authorities say 16-year-old Ja’ymeir Davis and his 15-year-old girlfriend were arrested after investigators linked them to the shootings that claimed the lives of five family members.
Davis is being prosecuted as an adult and faces multiple charges, including five counts of first-degree murder. The teenage girl’s case is being handled in juvenile court, though prosecutors are reviewing whether she should also face adult charges.
According to investigators, the violence unfolded at multiple locations in East St. Louis, creating a shocking crime scene that left residents searching for answers.
Police say the victims were all members of the same family and were targeted during the attacks.
The victims were identified as 74-year-old Patricia A. May, 49-year-old Cherie L. May, 24-year-old Devin D. May, 21-year-old Quentin L. Thompson, and 25-year-old Shania W. Thompson.
The shootings reportedly happened at locations including the Samuel Gompers Homes area, near 39th Street and Summit Avenue, and Jones Park.
Authorities launched a massive investigation after discovering multiple victims and worked quickly to locate the suspects.
Police later stopped a vehicle connected to the investigation at Holten State Park, where the two teenagers were taken into custody. Officials said there was no longer a threat to the community following the arrests.
The case has drawn national attention because of the ages of the suspects and the number of victims involved. Investigators are continuing to piece together what led up to the deadly attacks and what role each teenager allegedly played.
Family members have reportedly suggested that the teenage girl may have had ongoing issues with relatives before the shootings and that the attacks may have been planned. However, prosecutors say the investigation remains ongoing, and allegations against the suspects will be tested in court.
The tragedy has shaken the East St. Louis community, where neighbors and loved ones are mourning the loss of five people in a crime that authorities describe as one of the area’s most devastating recent incidents.
As the legal process moves forward, prosecutors will work to present evidence showing how the events unfolded, while defense attorneys will have the opportunity to challenge the accusations against the teenagers.
The case serves as another reminder of the growing concerns surrounding violent crimes involving young suspects and the devastating impact that gun violence can have on families and communities.
The investigation remains active as authorities continue gathering evidence and preparing for upcoming court proceedings.
