A Florida man is back behind bars after authorities say he tried an unusual disguise while taking part in a retail theft that ended with hundreds of dollars’ worth of body wash being stolen from a Walgreens.
According to investigators, 47-year-old Gerald Cobbs was arrested after deputies identified him as one of three suspects involved in the alleged shoplifting scheme at a Walgreens in Lakeland, Florida.
What made the case stand out wasn’t just the amount stolen—it was the fact that deputies say Cobbs disguised himself as a woman in an attempt to avoid being recognized on surveillance cameras.
The incident reportedly unfolded when three people entered the Walgreens together. Authorities say one suspect distracted a store employee while the other two loaded shopping bags with body wash and quickly walked out of the store without paying.
By the time employees realized what had happened, the suspects had already fled the scene with approximately $650 worth of merchandise, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from inside the store and immediately began working to identify the suspects.
While deputies say Cobbs attempted to conceal his identity by dressing as a woman, the disguise allegedly wasn’t enough to fool seasoned investigators.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, detectives recognized Cobbs despite the outfit because of his lengthy criminal history and previous encounters with law enforcement. Deputies later located and arrested him on charges connected to the theft.
Sheriff Grady Judd didn’t hold back while discussing the arrest, saying Cobbs’ extensive criminal record made him an easy person to identify.
Authorities say Cobbs has accumulated 27 felony convictions and 17 misdemeanor convictions, with many of those offenses involving theft-related crimes. Officials also said he has spent more than 11 years in Florida state prison over multiple incarcerations.
While Cobbs has been taken into custody, investigators say the other two individuals believed to have participated in the theft have not yet been publicly identified. Detectives continue asking for information that could help locate the remaining suspects.
Retail theft has become a growing concern for businesses across the country, with stores increasingly relying on surveillance systems and organized loss prevention teams to identify repeat offenders.
Law enforcement agencies have also stepped up efforts to crack down on organized retail theft rings, particularly when multiple suspects work together to distract employees while merchandise is stolen.
