A viral video recorded at Louisiana State University has sparked outrage and heated conversations after a student was seen dragging what appears to be a Black baby doll across campus with a rope tied around its neck.
The footage, reportedly recorded inside the LSU Student Union in Baton Rouge on Wednesday, August 19, shows two young women walking through the building while one of them pulls the doll behind her. The video quickly spread across social media, prompting questions about what the students were trying to communicate and why the incident was allowed to continue.
The disturbing imagery immediately drew strong reactions because of the historical associations connected to Black people being dragged or lynched. Students, parents and social media users have questioned the intent behind the stunt and called on LSU to address what happened.
One LSU parent who shared the video online said her daughter recorded the incident after seeing the students on campus. The parent questioned why nobody appeared to intervene while the doll was being dragged through the Student Union.
The video was reportedly recorded shortly after students began arriving for the upcoming school year. LSU has acknowledged the footage and said its Office of Student Affairs is investigating the incident. The university has not publicly identified the students involved or announced any disciplinary action.
As the video continued circulating, a woman identifying herself on Facebook as the mother of the Black student who appeared alongside the woman dragging the doll offered an explanation for what happened.
According to the mother’s social media post, the doll belonged to her daughter, who had received it about a year earlier. She claimed her daughter and her friend were attempting to be funny and did not intend for the stunt to have a racist meaning.
The mother said she was upset after seeing the video and told her daughter to speak with her resident adviser, apologize and get rid of the doll. She also reportedly said her daughter wanted to apologize to university officials.
That explanation, however, has not been independently verified by LSU, and the university has not publicly confirmed the identities of the students or their alleged motivations.
As expected, the internet quickly came up with its own theories about why the students were dragging the doll around campus.
Some social media users speculated that the incident could have been connected to sorority recruitment or hazing, while others suggested it may have been some type of social experiment or statement. None of those theories have been confirmed by LSU.
The university’s investigation is expected to determine more about what happened and whether the students violated LSU’s student conduct policies.
The controversy has also raised broader questions about how universities should respond when behavior on campus is viewed as offensive or racially insensitive, particularly when students say they did not intend to cause harm.
