The Brooklyn rapper Papoose has unleashed his new track and official music video for “Jezebel,” and fans immediately started connecting the dots between the song and his ongoing divorce drama with his estranged wife, Remy Ma.
And after listening to the bars, it’s hard to argue that this is just some random relationship record.
Papoose appears to be speaking directly to Remy throughout the track, bringing up some extremely personal details about their marriage, her time behind bars, their alleged relationship problems and the accusations that have surrounded their split.
The song arrived as the former couple’s relationship continues to play out publicly, with Remy recently teasing her own new music while also publicly challenging Papoose to finalize their divorce.
Right from the beginning, Papoose appears to establish exactly who he’s talking to by repeatedly addressing a woman as “Jezebel.”
One of the most talked-about moments comes when Papoose references the years Remy spent incarcerated.
He raps about bringing her food and sending her mail while she was locked up, before bringing up the bond money and claiming that he continues to send her money through Zelle.
Those details are significant because Papoose was publicly known for standing by Remy during her incarceration. Remy served more than six years before being released in 2014, and their relationship became one of hip-hop’s most recognizable love stories.
But this isn’t a love song.
Papoose turns the record into a full-on airing out.
At one point, he accuses the woman he’s addressing of cheating with a “fake Papoose,” a line that listeners are connecting to the long-running allegations involving battle rapper Eazy The Block Captain.
He also pushes back against allegations that he cheated, claiming that he never publicly exposed certain things even though he says he knew what happened.
Then Papoose takes another major shot by addressing the idea that Remy was responsible for some of the writing associated with her music.
In one of the song’s most controversial moments, he claims that while he publicly gave her credit and said she was better than him, he was actually writing her raps behind the scenes.
That particular allegation could create an entirely different conversation among hip-hop fans.
The song comes at a particularly explosive time because Remy and Papoose have been publicly going back and forth while Papoose’s relationship with professional boxer Claressa Shields has also become part of the drama.
Earlier this week, Remy and Shields exchanged shots online, with Remy posting old direct messages between herself and Shields while also challenging Papoose to sign their divorce papers.
Remy has also been teasing her own music, including a song titled “Why I Get Married,” adding even more fuel to the speculation that both sides are now taking their relationship problems into the recording booth.
Papoose isn’t simply throwing generic breakup bars at an ex.
He’s bringing up prison, money, alleged infidelity, their daughter, accusations surrounding their marriage and even claims about songwriting.
At the same time, it’s important to separate the allegations in the song from established facts. Papoose’s accusations are his claims and should not automatically be treated as proven facts.
Still, fans clearly believe they know exactly who he’s talking about.
Social media has already exploded with reactions, with some listeners calling the record a diss track while others think Papoose sounds like a man who is still emotionally invested in the relationship.
Either way, Papoose just turned years of relationship drama into a brand-new chapter of the saga.
