A Florida domestic-violence investigation reportedly turned into one of the wildest family scandals to hit Lakeland after deputies say they uncovered an alleged sexual relationship between a mother and her own adult son.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit, 46-year-old Christina Clemens and her 22-year-old biological son, Shane Clemens, are both facing incest charges after investigators allegedly learned the two had been sexually involved for several years.
And somehow, the case gets even crazier.
The investigation reportedly started on August 21 after deputies responded to a domestic-violence incident involving Shane. Investigators said Shane had gotten into an argument with a woman over her phone and allegedly pushed her to the ground. Deputies reported seeing injuries to the woman’s palms, and Shane later allegedly admitted that he pushed her.
But while investigating that incident, authorities say Shane made an unsolicited statement that completely changed the direction of the case.
According to reporting from Tampa Free Press, Shane allegedly told investigators that he had been having sex with his mother since he turned 18.
Investigators then reportedly began digging deeper into the shocking claim.
The arrest affidavit says Shane later provided additional information about the alleged relationship and told detectives that it had continued for approximately four years. Authorities also alleged that some of the encounters took place at the Lakeland home where the family lived.
Then came another alleged bombshell.
According to the affidavit, investigators monitored a jail phone call between Shane and Christina. Detectives allegedly heard Christina ask Shane whether he wanted to “stop doing what we do.” Investigators also alleged the conversation included discussion about deleting evidence from Shane’s phone.
Deputies later interviewed Christina after advising her of her Miranda rights.
Authorities say she allegedly admitted to investigators that she had sexual intercourse with her son on at least 100 separate occasions, along with other sexual activity. Investigators also reportedly checked Shane’s birth certificate and confirmed that Christina was his biological mother.
And there was another person reportedly caught in the middle of the bizarre situation: Christina’s husband.
According to Tampa Free Press, investigators spoke with Christina’s husband, who reportedly said he had no idea the alleged relationship was taking place. He allegedly told investigators that he had become suspicious because Christina and Shane would frequently lock themselves inside the master bedroom.
Christina was not only hit with an incest charge.
Because investigators say she had been legally married for roughly 10 years, she was also charged with living in open adultery, a second-degree misdemeanor. Both Christina and Shane face incest charges, which are reported as third-degree felonies. Shane also faces the domestic-battery charge connected to the original incident.
The adultery charge is particularly unusual. Eye In The Sky News reported that someone familiar with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said they had never seen an adultery charge during their 27 years with the agency.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd also addressed the case publicly, reacting to the allegations during a briefing. Tampa Free Press reported that Judd emphasized the alleged admission and expressed disbelief over the circumstances.
For now, the allegations remain allegations, and the criminal cases will have to play out in court.
But what started as a routine domestic-violence call in Lakeland allegedly uncovered a years-long secret that investigators say involved a mother, her adult son, and a relationship that ultimately resulted in both being arrested on incest charges.
