Rick Ross is making headlines after being arrested in Miami Beach, Florida, on domestic violence-related charges. The Maybach Music Group founder appeared before a judge Thursday morning, October 1, following his arrest, as details surrounding the allegations against the rapper continue to emerge.
According to reports, Ross, whose legal name is William Leonard Roberts, 50, was taken into custody early Thursday and booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade.
The rapper faces one felony count of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanor count of battery involving domestic violence, according to court records.
During his bond court appearance, Ross appeared alongside his attorney, who asked the judge to expedite his release. His attorney also pointed out that Ross was a celebrity and expressed concern for his safety while being held in custody.
Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Mindy S. Glazer responded that Ross would be treated fairly, just like everyone else appearing before the court.
Ross’ attorney subsequently entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf.
According to WSVN and CBS Miami, the judge set his bond at $6,000 total, consisting of $5,000 for the felony battery by strangulation charge and $1,000 for the misdemeanor battery charge.
His arraignment is scheduled for October 22.
According to WPLG Local 10 which cited the arrest report, the alleged incident occurred on August 28.
The woman reportedly told police that Ross became enraged over an Instagram photo in which she was tagged. She alleged that he slapped her repeatedly when she denied doing anything wrong.
The woman further alleged that Ross struck her in the chest several times, leaving her struggling to breathe. She also claimed that he grabbed her by her ponytail and slammed her head against the ground.
These allegations have not been proven in court, and Ross is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Authorities had not immediately released all the details surrounding the case when the initial reports were published.
Arrest Comes After Ex-Girlfriend’s Public Allegations
Ross’ arrest comes days after his former girlfriend, Jazzma Kendrick, publicly accused the rapper of physically abusing her.
On social media, Kendrick alleged that Ross injured her lip during an incident she said occurred approximately a month earlier. She also shared images of her injuries and spoke about leaving an allegedly abusive relationship.
According to CBS Miami, it was not immediately clear whether Kendrick’s public allegations were directly connected to the incident underlying Ross’ arrest.
The relationship between the woman involved in the arrest and Ross had not been fully established in the initial information released about the case.
Ross had not publicly responded to Kendrick’s allegations in the reports published before his arrest.
What’s Next for Rick Ross?
The arrest represents a serious legal development for the Miami rapper, who has spent nearly two decades building his name in hip-hop.
Ross rose to prominence with his 2006 hit single “Hustlin'” and went on to establish Maybach Music Group, the record label associated with artists including Meek Mill and Wale.
For now, the case will move through the court system as Ross prepares for his scheduled October 22 arraignment.
The charges remain allegations, and the upcoming proceedings will determine how the case moves forward.
