Student Dies After Falling From 4th Floor Following Fight at LA High School

A tragic situation unfolded at a Los Angeles high school this week after an 18-year-old student died following a fall from the fourth floor of a school building after a physical altercation with another student.

The incident happened Wednesday, September 30, at Benjamin Franklin High School in Highland Park, where police were called to the campus shortly after 1 p.m. following reports that a student had fallen from a fourth-floor balcony.

The student was transported to a local hospital after suffering critical injuries in the fall, but he ultimately died.

Authorities have not publicly released his name.

According to FOX 11, the incident reportedly began inside a fourth-floor classroom while students were receiving instruction. Video obtained by the station reportedly shows two students involved in a physical fight while a teacher can be heard telling them to stop.

The footage reportedly shows one student punching the other multiple times before leaving the classroom. The student who was attacked then appears to run from the classroom, with the other student following him into the hallway.

Moments later, the student went over the fourth-floor balcony railing and fell.

Witnesses described hearing a loud impact after the fall, leaving students and staff shaken as emergency crews rushed to the scene.

While the fight reportedly happened immediately before the fall, authorities have not said that the other student caused the fatal fall. In fact, the Los Angeles Police Department has said there is currently no evidence of foul play, according to the Los Angeles Times.

That distinction is important as videos and claims about the incident continue circulating online.

Police have not announced criminal charges or an arrest involving the other student.

The circumstances surrounding exactly what happened during those final moments remain under investigation.

The school was placed on lockdown following the incident while law enforcement and emergency personnel responded. Students remained on campus for nearly three hours as authorities investigated what had happened.

The lockdown was eventually lifted, and parents began arriving to pick up their children.

The tragedy has also left students and families dealing with the shock of losing a classmate.

A memorial began forming outside the school as students and members of the community gathered to remember the student. School officials have also arranged additional mental-health professionals and grief counselors to support students and staff.

Benjamin Franklin High School Principal Marine Davtyan told the school community that privacy and confidentiality laws prevented officials from releasing additional details about the student involved.

School officials also emphasized that the safety and emotional well-being of students and staff remain a priority following the tragedy.

The incident has understandably sparked conversations online about school fights, bullying and how quickly a physical confrontation can turn into something much more serious.

However, authorities are still working to establish the complete timeline of events, and some details circulating on social media have not been independently confirmed.

The Los Angeles Police Department is continuing its death investigation and reviewing available evidence, including witness accounts and video footage.

For now, the student’s family is left mourning a life that ended after a horrifying incident at what should have been an ordinary school day.

As the investigation continues, authorities have not released additional information about a possible motive for the classroom fight or whether any disciplinary or criminal action will be taken against the other student involved.

The school community is expected to continue receiving grief counseling and emotional support as students and staff try to process what happened.
