Lil Nas X Honors Late Mother in “World’s Greatest!” Video.

Grammy-winning rapper Lil Nas X has officially returned with his brand-new single “World’s Greatest!”, along with an emotional music video that takes fans on a trip through his childhood, his rise to fame, and some of the personal struggles he has faced along the way.

Released Thursday, October 1, the song marks Lil Nas X’s first new release of 2026 and his first major single since his 2025 run of music. The new record arrives with a completely different energy from some of the wild and controversial moments that helped make him one of the biggest stars in the world.

This time, Lil Nas X is getting personal.

The six-minute visual was directed by Phillip Youmans and filmed in Lil Nas X’s hometown of Atlanta. Instead of relying on flashy celebrity cameos or a massive spectacle, the video focuses heavily on Nas himself — specifically the connection between the man he is today and the kid he used to be.

The video opens with Lil Nas X inside a dance studio, working through choreography while struggling to get the movements right. His instructor pushes him to stop repeating the same mistakes and figure out what is holding him back.

That message becomes much bigger than just learning a dance routine.

As the video continues, viewers are taken into dramatized moments from Lil Nas X’s childhood. A younger version of the rapper is shown experiencing different memories, including spending time with his mother, learning how to ride a bike, running around outside, and even playing around with his mother’s high-heeled boots.

Those childhood moments eventually become connected to the adult Lil Nas X standing inside the dance studio.

The younger version of himself eventually appears alongside the present-day star, creating a visual representation of Nas X reconnecting with the kid he used to be.

And that’s where the video really hits.

Throughout the song, Lil Nas X repeatedly delivers the message that he is a champion and that he has made it through difficult circumstances. The lyrics reflect on coming from humble beginnings and growing up with his mother, grandmother, sisters and brothers before eventually becoming one of the most recognizable artists on the planet.

The song was written entirely by Lil Nas X and produced by C.WRAY and Steve Rusch. The production has a rock-inspired, uplifting feel, while Nas uses the record to reflect on where he came from and where he hopes to go next.

But the most emotional part of the entire video comes toward the end.

Lil Nas X’s mother, Tamikia Hill, passed away earlier this year. Before releasing “World’s Greatest!,” the rapper shared a voicemail she had left for him.

In the message, Hill encouraged her son to keep his head up and continue to “walk by faith, not by sight.” Lil Nas X later explained that the phrase was one of his mother’s favorite things to say and that it has taken on an even deeper meaning for him as he moves forward in life.

The music video brings that message full circle.

Near the conclusion, a childhood image of his mother appears as her voicemail plays in the background. The video then closes with a dedication to Hill reading “In loving memory” followed by a personal message from her son.

“Love u forever mommy.”

It’s a simple ending, but it completely changes the feeling of the video.

“World’s Greatest!” also arrives during a major period of transition for Lil Nas X. After taking time away from the spotlight, the rapper has been opening up more about his personal life and his road back to creating music.

Now, rather than returning with another huge controversy or trying to shock the internet, Nas X appears to be telling fans where his head and heart are at through his music.

The new video also gives fans another glimpse at what could be next for the rapper. “World’s Greatest!” follows his Days Before Dreamboy project from 2025 and comes as anticipation continues surrounding his long-awaited sophomore album, DREAMBOY.

For a superstar who built his career by constantly reinventing himself, “World’s Greatest!” feels like a different kind of comeback.

It’s not just Lil Nas X reminding everybody what he has accomplished.

It’s Lil Nas X looking back at the kid from Atlanta who dreamed about becoming something bigger — and showing that kid exactly how far he made it.

And with his mother’s voice guiding the final moments, the message is clear: Lil Nas X is moving forward while carrying her words with him.
