An off-duty NYPD detective was reportedly stabbed seven times and robbed of his gold chain during a violent daytime attack in the Bronx — and now police are searching for two suspects after newly released surveillance footage captured the men investigators say are responsible.
The incident happened Friday afternoon, October 2, around 1:45 p.m. near Rochambeau Avenue and East 206th Street in the Norwood section of the Bronx.
According to police, the victim is 33-year-old Detective Jose Mercedes, who is assigned to the NYPD’s 44th Precinct. Investigators say Mercedes was near his vehicle when two men riding a motorized bike approached him.
The suspects allegedly attacked Mercedes and stabbed and slashed him multiple times before forcibly taking a chain from around his neck. According to NBC New York, the detective suffered seven stab wounds, including injuries to his torso and leg.
Despite being seriously injured, Mercedes reportedly chased after the suspects on foot following the attack.
ABC7 reported that the detective pursued the men for roughly two blocks before collapsing near East 206th Street and Rochambeau Avenue. Witnesses reportedly saw him bleeding heavily as emergency responders rushed to the scene.
Mercedes was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where he was listed in stable condition. His family told ABC7 that he remained alert and was talking while recovering at the hospital.
The NYPD has now released surveillance images and video showing the two men investigators want to identify.
According to police, one suspect was seen wearing a blue sweatshirt and black pants, while the second suspect was shirtless and wearing black pants. The pair were seen riding a motorized bike and reportedly fled southbound on Rochambeau Avenue after the robbery.
Authorities have not announced any arrests as of the latest reports.
The violent attack also brought top city officials to Jacobi Hospital. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch visited Mercedes and his family after learning about the stabbing.
The Detectives’ Endowment Association also issued a statement supporting Mercedes as he recovers.
Meanwhile, investigators are asking anyone who recognizes the suspects or knows anything about the robbery to contact police.
The NYPD is urging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). Spanish-language tips can be submitted at 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Tips can also be submitted online or through @NYPDTips, and authorities say calls and messages can be kept confidential.
For now, the two suspects remain wanted as detectives continue working to identify them and determine exactly what led to the violent confrontation.
The investigation remains active.
