A Florida woman is facing a criminal charge after authorities say she demanded $1,000 from a family in exchange for returning their missing dog, turning what began as a search for a lost pet into a criminal investigation.
According to reports, Christina Spence Reid, 37, was arrested in Marion County after investigators alleged that she refused to return a dog named Teddy unless the animal’s owners paid her $1,000.
The case has sparked attention because the family was reportedly trying to get their beloved pet back after discovering that someone had found him.
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began on October 9, when Teddy reportedly wandered away from his home.
The following day, the dog’s owner contacted authorities. During the investigation, the family reportedly told deputies they came across a Facebook post indicating that Teddy had been found.
The owners then reached out to the person who had posted about the dog, identified by investigators as Reid.
According to the arrest affidavit described in local news reports, Reid sent the family a photograph of herself with Teddy. However, investigators allege that the conversation took an unexpected turn when the family was told they would have to pay $1,000 to get their dog back.
Instead of simply arranging the dog’s return, the situation allegedly escalated into a dispute over money.
Authorities say Teddy’s owners attempted to work things out with Reid and arranged to meet in an effort to recover their pet.
However, according to the arrest affidavit, Reid allegedly refused to hand over Teddy when the family arrived because she had not received the requested $1,000.
The affidavit also describes a follow-up exchange between the family and Reid through Facebook Messenger.
When the owner reportedly asked when Teddy would be returned, Reid allegedly responded by asking when the family would have her money.
That exchange reportedly prompted the family to seek additional help from law enforcement.
For the owners, what should have been a straightforward reunion with their missing dog had become a situation requiring police intervention.
Investigators with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office subsequently contacted Reid as they looked into the allegations.
According to WESH and WKMG reports, deputies met with Reid on October 10. Authorities said Teddy was still in her possession when investigators located her at her residence.
Investigators also reportedly questioned Reid about the demand for money.
During the encounter, body-camera footage aired by WESH captured Reid disputing the suggestion that she was attempting to obtain money in exchange for the dog.
“I wasn’t trying to get money from them to get the dog, sir,” Reid said in the footage described by the station.
According to the sheriff’s office account cited by WKMG, Reid allegedly acknowledged that she intended to keep Teddy unless the owners paid.
The competing accounts surrounding the encounter are part of the circumstances reported in the investigation.
Reid was arrested Saturday night and transported to the Marion County Jail, according to local reports published October 13 and 14.
She faces a charge of grand theft in connection with the incident.
Reid was released the following day after posting a $2,500 bond.
Authorities have not announced a conviction, and the charge remains an allegation. The case will proceed through the legal system, where the evidence and circumstances can be evaluated.
While the criminal investigation continues, there is a positive ending to one part of the story: Teddy has reportedly been returned to his family.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the dog was reunited with his owners after deputies intervened.
For the family, getting Teddy back brought an end to the immediate search for their missing pet. The allegations surrounding the demand for money, however, have led to a criminal case.
The incident also serves as a reminder for pet owners to contact local authorities when a dispute over a missing animal becomes suspicious or someone refuses to return a pet.
