A daring stunt in Gilbert, Arizona, has captured the attention of the internet — and the local police.
Eighteen-year-old Sam Campbell was arrested after a video of him jumping his dirt bike roughly 15 feet over a residential street went viral.
While the jump amazed viewers online, authorities say it put neighbors and the rider himself at serious risk.
The video, widely shared on Instagram and TikTok, shows Campbell accelerating across a grassy area before launching into the air.
He cleared a median and landed safely on another patch of grass across the street. Though the jump lasted only a few seconds, it quickly drew millions of views and nearly a million likes, sparking both admiration and concern online.
Gilbert Police responded promptly after identifying the rider. Officers described the stunt as “careless” and “outrageous,” noting that it took place in a residential area where children, families, and other residents were present.
Police quickly arrested Campbell and impounded the dirt bike.
In the wake of the arrest, Campbell’s father, Nick Campbell, spoke publicly about the incident. He said his son regrets the stunt and understands the consequences, emphasizing that Sam is a quiet teen who is not seeking attention.
“He knows he made a mistake and is very sorry,” Nick Campbell said. “We wish we could undo this, but it’s a lesson he’ll carry with him.”
Nick also expressed concern that the incident may be receiving more attention than warranted, describing his son as a responsible young adult who made one poor decision.
Campbell faces a charge of reckless driving. His dirt bike will remain impounded until the investigation concludes, and additional penalties could follow depending on the outcome of the case.
This incident highlights the growing challenge communities face with viral social media stunts. While the internet may celebrate feats of skill and daring, local authorities are left to balance public safety with online fame.
