A tragic accident in Memphis has left a community grieving after a 6-year-old boy was fatally struck by a vehicle while playing outside his home.
According to authorities, the child had been playing basketball in a neighborhood street in the Frayser area when the ball rolled away.
While attempting to retrieve it, the boy ran into the roadway and was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported the child to a nearby hospital, but he later died from his injuries.
Police identified the driver involved in the crash as Kenyunte W. Goss. Investigators say Goss remained at the scene following the collision and cooperated with authorities during the initial investigation.
Goss was later arrested and charged with driving with a suspended or revoked license and failure to maintain financial responsibility, which typically refers to not having required vehicle insurance. Officials noted that additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
The incident occurred on Whitney Avenue in the Frayser neighborhood, a residential area where children are often seen playing outside. Neighbors told reporters that the sudden loss has shaken the community, with many expressing heartbreak for the child’s family.
Police are continuing to review evidence and determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities have not released the child’s name publicly.
Safety experts often remind drivers to remain especially cautious in residential neighborhoods, where children may unexpectedly enter the street while playing.
The investigation remains ongoing.
