A police officer with the Houston Police Department has been relieved of duty following a viral social media video in which she allegedly made racist remarks, prompting an internal investigation and widespread public backlash.
Officer Ashley Gonzalez, who joined the department in 2024, was removed from active duty after the video began circulating online earlier this week.
In the clip, Gonzalez is reportedly heard using offensive language and making statements that raised concerns about her ability to serve the public impartially.
In a statement, the Houston Police Department said it was “extremely disturbed” by the content of the video and confirmed that Gonzalez’s police powers have been suspended pending the outcome of an internal affairs investigation.
Officials also stated that her badge and department-issued weapon were taken as a precaution.
“The behavior described in the video does not reflect the values or standards of this department,” the agency said, adding that it is committed to maintaining accountability and public trust.
The incident has sparked strong reactions from community leaders and civil rights advocates, including representatives from the NAACP, who have called for swift disciplinary action. Several local officials echoed those concerns, emphasizing the importance of fairness and professionalism in law enforcement.
“This kind of rhetoric is deeply troubling, especially from someone entrusted with public safety,” one community leader said. “It undermines confidence in the system and raises serious questions about bias.”
The Houston Police Officers’ Union also issued a statement condemning the alleged remarks, noting that such behavior is unacceptable and does not represent the majority of officers who serve the city.
Gonzalez remains employed by the department while the investigation is ongoing. Authorities have not announced a timeline for its completion, but officials indicated that disciplinary action, including possible termination, could follow depending on the findings.
The situation continues to develop as the department reviews the circumstances surrounding the video and assesses whether departmental policies were violated.
