BEDFORD, Ohio — A young Ohio man has been sentenced to prison after admitting to fatally shooting his girlfriend during an argument in an AutoZone parking lot, a case that shocked the local community and drew widespread attention.
Newly released police body camera footage obtained by Law&Crime is shedding further light on the fatal shooting of a young woman outside an AutoZone store, a case that drew widespread attention and led to a prison sentence earlier this year.
The incident occurred on August 4, 2025, outside an AutoZone store along Broadway Avenue in Bedford.
According to police, 20-year-old Riley Jones and her boyfriend, 22-year-old Darien Hobley, became involved in a heated confrontation in the parking lot before the situation escalated into violence.
Authorities said Hobley shot Jones once in the chest during the argument. Emergency responders transported her to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Investigators determined that the couple had driven separately to the location and continued their dispute upon arrival.
Surveillance footage and witness accounts indicated that moments before the shooting, Jones approached Hobley’s vehicle. Within seconds, a gunshot was fired.
Following the shooting, Hobley entered the store and told employees to call 911 before fleeing the scene on foot. Police quickly located and arrested him a short distance away.
Initially charged with multiple offenses including murder and felonious assault, Hobley later pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence as part of a plea agreement.
During his sentencing in February 2026, Hobley expressed remorse in court, stating he did not intend to harm Jones. The presiding judge described the case as “tragic,” emphasizing the irreversible consequences of a split-second decision involving a firearm.
He was ultimately sentenced to between 8 and 10½ years in prison, followed by a period of post-release supervision.
The case has renewed conversations around domestic disputes and gun violence, with community members and officials urging greater awareness and intervention in escalating conflicts.
