DALLAS, Texas — Following Karmelo Anthony’s conviction and 35-year prison sentence in the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf, Dr. Matthews held a press conference criticizing the verdict and announcing efforts to support Anthony’s appeal.
Anthony was convicted of murder by a Collin County jury in connection with the 2025 stabbing death of Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco. Dr. Matthews described the outcome as a “modern-day lynching” and called the sentence excessive, stating that she had anticipated a guilty verdict from the outset.
According to Dr. Matthews, attention has now shifted to the appeals process. She said supporters and activists are helping Anthony’s family identify qualified appellate attorneys while leaving the final decision on legal representation to the family.
Dr. Matthews also raised concerns about Anthony’s transfer to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice after sentencing and questioned aspects of the appellate counsel appointment process.
During the event, she sharply criticized Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis, referencing a federal sexual harassment lawsuit previously filed against him and discussing allegations contained in court records.
She argued that voters should be informed about claims involving public officials.
In addition, Dr. Matthews criticized Collin County Judge John Roach Jr., encouraging community members to research candidates and remain active in local elections.
She estimated that Anthony’s appeal could take one to two years and urged supporters, independent journalists, and community advocates to stay engaged as the case moves through the appellate process.
