CANOGA PARK, Calif. — What began as a joyful celebration of the New York Knicks’ championship victory ended in tragedy Saturday night when Los Angeles police officers responding to a welfare check fatally shot a family dog inside a Canoga Park condominium complex.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers were dispatched shortly after 8 p.m. to a condominium building on Jordan Avenue after receiving reports of a woman screaming. Authorities said officers encountered a dog that allegedly charged toward them, prompting an officer to open fire.
The dog, a 2-year-old mixed breed named Jameson, died at the scene.
Family members say they had been celebrating the Knicks’ championship win moments before the shooting occurred.

The family’s son told local media that Jameson was energetic and friendly and had never shown signs of aggression. Family members have questioned whether lethal force was necessary and are seeking answers about the circumstances that led to the shooting.
The neighbor who called 911 reportedly said they believed the screaming indicated a possible emergency and acted out of concern for the family’s safety. After learning what happened, the caller expressed regret and sadness over the outcome.
In the days following the incident, neighbors began leaving flowers, candles, and messages near the location where Jameson was killed. The growing memorial reflects the shock felt throughout the community.
The LAPD has stated that the shooting is under review. Investigators will examine body-camera footage, witness statements, and other evidence to determine whether department policies were followed.
The incident has renewed discussion about police encounters involving family pets and the challenges officers face when responding to rapidly evolving situations. Animal welfare advocates and community members are calling for transparency as the investigation proceeds.
