MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A Miami Beach man is facing criminal charges after authorities say he intentionally damaged one of the city’s giant inflatable soccer balls that were installed as part of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 celebrations.
According to reports, the 34-year-old suspect was arrested Monday after investigators accused him of slashing a large inflatable soccer ball displayed in Miami Beach.
The inflatable was part of the city’s “Arena of Nations” installation, a public art and fan-engagement project featuring 48 oversized soccer balls representing each nation participating in the expanded FIFA World Cup tournament.
Police have not publicly released a motive for the alleged vandalism. Authorities said the damage was limited to the inflatable display, and there have been no reports of injuries connected to the incident.
The suspect was taken into custody and is expected to face charges related to criminal mischief and property damage.
The damaged display is one of dozens of giant 16-foot inflatable soccer balls positioned throughout Miami Beach parks, public spaces, and landmarks. City officials launched the installation to celebrate the arrival of the FIFA World Cup in South Florida and to encourage residents and visitors to explore the city during the tournament.
The “Arena of Nations” attraction officially debuted earlier this summer and has quickly become one of Miami Beach’s most recognizable World Cup-themed events.
The citywide installation serves as the centerpiece of a scavenger hunt that encourages fans to locate the inflatable soccer balls and share their experiences online. Each inflatable represents one of the 48 nations competing in the tournament.
Local officials have invested heavily in World Cup festivities as South Florida hosts matches and related events expected to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors.
In addition to the inflatable displays, Miami Beach has organized watch parties, cultural events, public art projects, and fan experiences throughout the tournament period.
The alleged vandalism comes as local authorities continue efforts to protect public installations and event-related attractions during one of the region’s busiest tourism periods. While the incident temporarily damaged one of the displays, officials have indicated that the broader World Cup celebration remains unaffected.
Investigators have not announced whether additional charges could be filed. The case remains under review.
