CANOGA PARK, LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Police Department has released body camera footage showing the moment an officer fatally shot a family dog wearing a New York Knicks shirt during a response to a 911 call in the Canoga Park neighborhood.
The incident occurred on June 13, 2026, after police were dispatched following reports of a woman screaming inside an apartment building. Authorities later confirmed the call was triggered by a misunderstanding — neighbors believed the noises were distress calls, but the family was actually celebrating the New York Knicks’ NBA championship victory.
According to the released footage and witness accounts, officers arrived at the apartment complex and made contact with the resident, identified as Marie Marseille.
As the door was opened, her two-year-old mixed-breed dog, Jameson, wearing a blue Knicks jersey, ran toward the entrance and began barking.
Officers can be heard ordering the woman to secure the dog. Marseille attempts to control the animal, briefly holding the door and telling officers the dog is not aggressive.
However, the dog exits the apartment into the hallway and continues barking toward officers positioned outside.
Seconds later, one officer draws his firearm and fires multiple shots, striking the dog. The animal was fatally wounded at the scene.
The footage shows a chaotic and fast-moving interaction, with officers and the dog positioned within close proximity in a narrow hallway. The department later confirmed that no officers or civilians were injured during the incident.
The video has sparked widespread outrage online, with many viewers questioning the necessity of deadly force in the encounter.
A separate viral clip showing the dog’s owner grieving over the animal’s body has further intensified public reaction.
Los Angeles city officials, including Mayor Karen Bass, have acknowledged the incident and called for a full investigation into the use of force. LAPD officials stated the department’s Force Investigation Division is reviewing the shooting and that the case remains under internal review.
Advocacy groups have also demanded transparency, urging officials to release unedited footage and disclose more details about the officers involved.
As of now, LAPD has not announced whether any disciplinary action will be taken. The department says it is standard procedure for all officer-involved shootings to undergo a full investigation before any conclusions are reached.
The incident continues to draw attention as part of a broader national debate over police interactions with animals and the use of force in residential calls.
