Former Alexander High School teacher Maris Niclols made her first court appearance Thursday after surrendering to authorities following a grand jury indictment charging her with 27 felony offenses tied to alleged sexual misconduct involving multiple students.
Nichols 25, appeared before a magistrate judge just hours after she was booked into the Douglas county jail.
During the brief hearing, she acknowledged that she understood the charges against her, while her attorney waived a formal reading of the indictment.
The case has now been transferred to Douglas County Superior Court where future proceedings will take place.
According to documents, prosecutors allege Nichols engaged in inappropriate sexual relationships with at least six students between January and May 2026.
Some of the alleged explicit acts involving a minor were recorded, according to investigators.
It was also revealed that Nichols’ father is employed by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
Prosecutors stated that Nichols violated her house arrest conditions 38 times, including multiple curfew breaches while she was under electronic monitoring.
Nichols made a brief initial court appearance around 8:30 a.m., during which she confirmed she understood the charges against her.
Her defense attorney noted that because the case has already been indicted, it will now be handled in Superior Court. The attorney also waived a formal reading of the warrant during the hearing.
