BUCKEYE, Ariz. — A former Buckeye police officer is facing criminal charges after body camera footage allegedly captured two separate incidents in which she struck handcuffed individuals who were already in custody.
Former Officer Carri Carrico has been indicted on two counts of aggravated assault following an investigation into separate encounters involving detainees. Authorities allege both incidents involved individuals who were restrained and posed no immediate threat when the alleged assaults occurred.
Recently released body camera and surveillance footage shows the encounters that led to the criminal case. Investigators say the videos document Carrico punching two different handcuffed individuals during separate incidents while she was serving with the Buckeye Police Department.
Carrico resigned from the department earlier this month after the allegations came to light. She has since entered a plea of not guilty to the charges against her and is scheduled to stand trial in November.
The release of the footage has sparked renewed discussion over police use of force, particularly in situations involving restrained suspects. Legal experts note that officers are generally prohibited from using unnecessary or excessive force against individuals who are already under control unless a legitimate safety threat exists.
The Buckeye Police Department has not released additional details regarding the pending criminal case but has stated that it cooperated with the investigation.
If convicted, Carrico could face significant criminal penalties. Her case remains pending, and she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
The investigation continues as prosecutors prepare for trial later this year.
