Alabama Woman Accused of Killing Husband After Saying He “Bothered” Her During Recovery

An Alabama woman has been charged with murder after authorities say she admitted to fatally shooting her husband because she was irritated by him while recovering from heart surgery.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a home on Duncan Creek Road in Russellville, Alabama, on Sunday evening after receiving a 911 call from 65-year-old Sheri Mitchell-Clutts.

Investigators say Mitchell-Clutts remained on the line with dispatchers until deputies arrived at the residence.

When law enforcement entered the home, they discovered 69-year-old Timothy Clutts dead in a recliner with a single gunshot wound to the chest, officials said.

Sheriff Shannon Oliver stated that Mitchell-Clutts initially claimed she felt threatened throughout the day leading up to the shooting. However, investigators later said she admitted she had become frustrated and annoyed with her husband during her recovery from recent open-heart surgery.

Authorities say Mitchell-Clutts underwent surgery approximately two weeks before the incident. During questioning, investigators allege she told deputies that her husband repeatedly entered her room and bothered her while she was trying to rest.

According to investigators, Mitchell-Clutts retrieved a handgun because she believed her husband might continue bothering her. Officials say when he did not return to the room, she allegedly went looking for him and found him sitting in a recliner watching television before shooting him once in the chest.

The handgun believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered at the scene.

Sheriff Oliver said the case remains under investigation as detectives work to better understand the couple’s history and any circumstances that may have contributed to the deadly encounter.

“We’re going through [their history] at this time,” Oliver reportedly said, noting investigators reviewed years of call logs and found no prior domestic violence-related incidents connected to the residence.

Mitchell-Clutts was arrested and booked into the Franklin County Jail. She is currently being held without bond pending an Aniah’s Law hearing.

Authorities have not released additional details at this time.
