Babysitter Accused of Kidnapping Two Young Sisters After Befriending Their Mom on Facebook.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA — What began as an online friendship between two mothers has turned into a frightening kidnapping case after a Georgia woman was accused of taking two young sisters and refusing to return them to their mother.

Police say 42-year-old Lakesha Shanta Brown is accused of kidnapping 4-year-old Zola Cooper and her 11-month-old sister, Norah Cooper, after gaining the trust of their mother over the course of about a year.

According to reports, Brown met the girls’ mother, Elicia Redding, through a Facebook group for mothers. Over time, Brown allegedly developed a relationship with Redding and offered to help with the children, eventually becoming someone the mother believed she could trust.

That trust would allegedly lead to a terrifying ordeal.

On August 15, Redding allowed Brown to babysit the two girls. However, authorities say Brown failed to return the children as expected. As concern grew, communication between Brown and the mother reportedly became inconsistent, and police were eventually contacted.

What initially appeared to be a dispute over the children’s whereabouts quickly escalated into a major missing-children investigation.

Authorities issued a Levi’s Call, Georgia’s version of an AMBER Alert, for Zola and Norah. Investigators warned that the girls could be in extreme danger as law enforcement worked to locate Brown and the children.

The search came to an end after authorities tracked down Brown and discovered the two girls inside a trailer in Atlanta.

According to reports, officers found the children alive inside the trailer, which was described as having unsafe and extremely concerning living conditions. Recent coverage reported that the trailer was unventilated and sweltering during temperatures reaching approximately 97 degrees.

Body-camera footage reportedly captured the dramatic rescue as officers used bolt cutters to gain access to the trailer and locate the children.

Both girls were safely recovered and later taken for medical evaluation before being reunited with their family.

Brown was taken into custody and is accused of kidnapping and child cruelty in connection with the case. The allegations remain accusations, and Brown is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

A Previous Kidnapping Case Raises More Questions

As investigators continued looking into Brown’s background, reports revealed another troubling detail.

Brown had previously been charged in Alabama in connection with the 2021 kidnapping of a 4-day-old baby. In that case, authorities said a newborn was taken from a home in Fairfield, Alabama, before later being found safe.

The woman charged in that case was also identified as Lakesha Brown. According to reporting at the time, the child’s family believed Brown had befriended the baby’s mother before the alleged abduction.

That previous case has now drawn renewed attention following the allegations involving Zola and Norah. Recent reports indicate Brown had unresolved legal issues connected to the Alabama case, including an outstanding warrant.

The similarities between the two cases have raised serious questions about how Brown was allegedly able to gain the trust of mothers before being accused of taking their children.

For Redding, however, the ordeal ended with the outcome every parent hopes for: both of her daughters were found alive.

The case remains under investigation, and additional court proceedings are expected as Brown faces the allegations surrounding the disappearance of the two young sisters.
