A California man has been convicted of multiple counts of first-degree murder in a case that drew attention for both its brutality and the unusual circumstances that preceded the violence.
A jury found 31-year-old Eric Otto White guilty in the fatal shooting of three people during a 2020 incident in Redlands, a city in San Bernardino County.
Prosecutors said the victims included White’s girlfriend, her twin sister, and her brother-in-law during an incident reportedly triggered by anger over his karaoke speaker being touched and disagreements about the girlfriend’s parenting style
According to evidence presented at trial, the killings followed a domestic dispute that escalated rapidly inside the home.
Testimony indicated that an argument began over a karaoke speaker, which White reportedly became enraged about after it was handled by his girlfriend. What began as a minor disagreement soon spiraled into a deadly confrontation.
Authorities said White retrieved a firearm during the altercation and opened fire, killing all three victims at the scene.
Investigators described the attack as deliberate and sustained, noting that multiple shots were fired.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that the killings were premeditated and demonstrated clear intent, pointing to the sequence of events and White’s actions before and after the shooting.
The defense, meanwhile, attempted to challenge aspects of intent and mental state, though jurors ultimately sided with the prosecution.
The conviction includes special circumstances due to the number of victims, making White eligible for the most severe penalties under California law.
A separate penalty phase will determine whether he receives life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or faces the death penalty.
