Clovis, NM — A 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the deaths of his father and stepmother in what prosecutors describe as a planned murder for financial gain.
Police allege that Darren Munoz, a resident of Clovis, New Mexico, hired a friend to kill his parents so he could inherit money and property after they were deceased.
The Incident
On December 15, 2025, Clovis law enforcement officers responded to a reported burglary at a home on the city’s east side. When officers entered the residence, they found two adults suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. The victims were later identified as Munoz’s father and stepmother.
Officers also located evidence at the scene that raised questions about how the incident occurred, and a follow-up investigation revealed what investigators are calling a planned attack rather than a random break-in.
Alleged Motive and Arrests
According to an affidavit filed by investigators, Darren Munoz is accused of soliciting his friend, 18-year-old Julio Zamora, to commit the murders so that Munoz could profit financially. Authorities say the teens arranged details of the plot ahead of time and that weapons were involved in executing the plan.
Zamora was found and taken into custody along with a firearm believed to be connected to the crime. Darren Munoz was later arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, as well as conspiracy to commit murder and criminal solicitation.
Prosecutors allege that the motive was tied to inheritance — Munoz stood to benefit from his parents’ assets once they were “out of the picture.”
Legal Proceedings Underway
Both suspects are being held in detention pending future court hearings. Formal arraignments and detention hearings are scheduled, and prosecutors have indicated they plan to pursue the most serious charges as the case moves forward.
The community has been shaken by the allegations, as friends, neighbors, and schoolmates struggle to reconcile the severity of the charges with their own experiences with the young men involved.
Reaction from Family, Friends, Authorities
Local law enforcement has urged anyone with additional information to come forward, citing the importance of community cooperation in cases involving planned violent crime.
Family members of the victims have not publicly commented on the investigation, but sources close to them say they are devastated and are seeking privacy during this difficult time.
