Family Dollar employees seen dragging “mentally challenged” woman out of the store.

A Detroit family is calling for accountability and policy changes after a disturbing viral video showed Family Dollar employees dragging Sunda Carter—a woman with documented mental health challenges and currently experiencing homelessness—out of a local store during an alleged shoplifting incident.

The video, which rapidly spread across social media platforms, captures employees pulling Carter by her arms and forcing her out of the building as onlookers expressed shock. The footage ignited public outrage, with many questioning the store’s handling of the situation, particularly given Carter’s mental health needs and vulnerable circumstances.

Family members say they were heartbroken to see the way Carter was treated. They describe her as someone who has long struggled to access stable housing, health services, and consistent support. For years, they say, they have tried to get her the mental health care she needs but have faced barriers in the system.

In the wake of the incident, the family is now considering legal action, arguing that the employees’ actions were inappropriate and potentially dangerous. Advocates and community members have echoed these concerns, noting that situations involving individuals with mental health conditions require trained intervention—not force.

Online reports indicate that some of the employees involved in the confrontation were terminated following internal review by the company. Still, Carter’s family says this is only the beginning of their fight for justice. They hope the incident will spark broader conversations about how retailers handle suspected shoplifting cases and how vulnerable individuals are treated in public spaces.

As the video continues to circulate, many in the Detroit community are calling for improved training, greater awareness, and more humane approaches when dealing with those who are mentally ill or unhoused—emphasizing that no one deserves to be treated without dignity, regardless of their circumstances.
