An 11-year-old boy has been charged as an adult in connection with the fatal shooting of his father, authorities said, in a case that has raised questions about juvenile justice, gun access, and parental discipline.
According to court documents, the incident occurred in Perry County, Pennsylvania, after the child’s father allegedly took away the boy’s Nintendo Switch gaming console and told him to go to bed. Investigators say the boy later retrieved a firearm from a secured location inside the home and shot his father while he was asleep.
Police responded to a 911 call from the family’s home during the early morning hours. Officers found the father suffering from a gunshot wound to the head in the bedroom he shared with his wife. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities allege the child used a key to unlock a gun safe, believing the gaming console had been placed inside. Instead, investigators say, the boy removed a revolver, loaded it, and returned to the bedroom, where he fired a single shot at his father while he slept.
Court records indicate the child later told his mother, “I killed Daddy,” prompting the emergency call to police. During questioning, the boy reportedly admitted to shooting his father and told investigators he acted out of anger, adding that he did not fully consider the consequences of his actions.
Prosecutors have charged the child with criminal homicide and related offenses and are seeking to try him as an adult, citing the seriousness of the crime. Under Pennsylvania law, certain violent offenses allow for juveniles to be charged in adult court, though defense attorneys may request the case be transferred to juvenile court.
