AVENTURA, Fla. — Newly released police body-camera footage captures the arrest of a Miami man accused of striking another player with a metal softball bat during a Father’s Day league game in Aventura, an incident that authorities say escalated from an on-field dispute into a violent assault.
According to Aventura police, the altercation occurred on the morning of June 21 during an adult softball league game at Waterways Park. Investigators said tensions between opposing teams led to a verbal confrontation that quickly turned physical, involving multiple players.
Police allege that 41-year-old Roberto Araujo grabbed a metal bat during the fight and struck fellow player William Rodriguez in the back of the head. Rodriguez suffered a serious head injury and was transported to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital as a trauma patient.
Authorities said Araujo fled the scene before officers arrived. Investigators later identified him using witness statements, surveillance footage, and other evidence collected during the investigation.
Body-camera footage released by police shows officers taking Araujo into custody during his arrest. He faces a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
Family members of Rodriguez have described the attack as unprovoked and said they are grateful he survived. They have also called for accountability, saying the incident could have ended in a fatality.
Police say surveillance video from the park supports investigators’ account of the altercation and allegedly shows the suspect swinging the bat during the fight.
The case remains active as prosecutors move forward with the felony charge. Araujo has since been released from jail while awaiting further court proceedings.
The incident has drawn attention throughout South Florida, raising concerns about violence during recreational sporting events and prompting renewed discussion about player conduct in adult athletic leagues.
