A lobster diving trip in Florida reportedly turned into a terrifying underwater confrontation after authorities say a disagreement over a popular diving location escalated into a life-threatening situation.
According to investigators, 51-year-old Michael Joseph Simpson of Miami Beach is accused of getting into a heated argument over a “prime” lobster diving spot before allegedly interfering with a diver’s air supply while the diver was underwater.
The shocking incident reportedly happened during Florida’s lobster mini season near Fisher Island, where divers from across the state take to the water hoping to catch the prized crustaceans.
Authorities say the dispute started when Simpson allegedly approached another boat and claimed the group was diving in “his spot.” The argument reportedly intensified, with investigators alleging Simpson threatened to cut off the air supply of an 18-year-old diver who was below the surface searching for lobsters.
Police say Simpson then entered the water and allegedly shut off the diver’s surface-supplied air system, leaving the young diver without air while underwater.
The diver was reportedly pulled back to the boat by others nearby and was described as gasping for air and disoriented after the incident. Officials said the diver survived and was not seriously injured.
After the alleged confrontation, authorities say Simpson left the area before law enforcement arrived. He later surrendered to police and was arrested in connection with the incident.
Simpson is facing a charge of attempted second-degree murder, according to authorities. He was reportedly given a $10,000 bond.
The case has sparked outrage online, with many people questioning how a disagreement over a fishing location could escalate into a situation where someone’s life was allegedly put at risk.
However, Simpson’s attorney has pushed back against the allegations, claiming his client did not tamper with the diving equipment and that evidence, including video footage, supports Simpson’s side of the story.
