GRESHAM — A midday shooting in the Gresham neighborhood of Chicago’s South Side left two people injured Wednesday, with one victim in critical condition, according to the Chicago Police Department.
The incident occurred around 1:25 p.m. in the 7900 block of South May Street, where officers responded to reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they found two victims inside a vehicle that had been struck by gunfire.
A 26-year-old woman was shot multiple times during the incident. She was rushed to Little Company of Mary Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition, according to police.
A 27-year-old man was also struck by gunfire. He was transported to Christ Hospital and was reported to be in good condition.
Police have not released the identities of the victims, and it is unclear whether they were known to each other or connected to the shooting in any way.
Authorities said the vehicle involved in the shooting later crashed into a van nearby. The driver of the van declined medical treatment at the scene.
The crash added an additional layer of urgency to the situation, as emergency responders worked to secure the scene and provide aid to the injured victims.
Police confirmed that a baby was in the back seat of the vehicle during the shooting. Fortunately, the child was not injured, officials said.
The presence of the child raised concerns among residents and prompted immediate questions about the safety of children in the city’s violent incidents.
No Arrests, Investigation Ongoing
As of the latest update, no suspects were in custody, and detectives were actively investigating the incident. Police have not released any information about possible motives or the number of shooters involved.
Chicago police are encouraging anyone with information or video footage from the area to come forward as the investigation continues.
The shooting comes amid a year marked by ongoing violence across the city, particularly on the South and West sides. Gresham, like many South Side neighborhoods, has faced challenges related to gun violence, and residents say incidents like this continue to strain community trust and safety.
Neighbors who spoke with local reporters described the scene as chaotic, with multiple emergency vehicles arriving quickly after the shooting was reported.
“You hear gunshots and then you don’t know what to do. You just pray nobody else gets hurt,” one resident said. Many residents expressed frustration that violent incidents continue to occur in broad daylight, sometimes near homes and schools.
The Chicago Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or has security camera footage from the area to contact detectives. Tips can be submitted through the CPD tip line or anonymously via Crime Stoppers.
