An Indiana man is facing some disturbing charges after police say he repeatedly bit a 9-month-old baby’s face so hard that the child suffered serious injuries.
According to investigators, the suspect later made a shocking comment about the infant’s appearance, allegedly telling authorities the baby looked like a “busted up egg” after the attack.
Authorities in Bloomington, Indiana, arrested 18-year-old Kaden Manuek Lewis Shrum following an investigation into injuries discovered on the infant while the child was under his care. Court documents say the baby’s mother became alarmed after noticing a large wound on the child’s face and immediately sought medical attention.
Doctors reportedly determined the injury was consistent with a human bite, prompting law enforcement to launch an investigation into what happened.
When questioned by detectives, police say Shrum initially admitted to lightly “nibbling” on the baby’s cheek in an attempt to stop the child from crying. However, investigators allege he later confessed that the biting escalated, describing it as repeatedly “chomping down” on the infant’s face.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Shrum allegedly told investigators he became frustrated because the baby would not stop crying. Instead of walking away or seeking help, police say he resorted to biting the child multiple times, causing severe injuries that required emergency medical treatment.
As if the allegations weren’t disturbing enough, investigators say Shrum made another statement that left them stunned. According to court documents, he allegedly remarked that the infant looked like a “busted up egg” after the attack, a comment that has since drawn widespread outrage online.
Medical personnel reportedly documented significant injuries to the child’s face, with the bite wound covering a large portion of one cheek. Authorities have not publicly released additional information about the baby’s current condition, but the child is believed to be recovering after receiving treatment.
Following the investigation, Shrum was arrested and booked into jail. Prosecutors charged him with battery with a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
Under Indiana law, prosecutors allege that human teeth can qualify as a deadly weapon when used in a manner capable of causing serious bodily injury.
The case has quickly spread across social media, with many people expressing disbelief over the allegations. Comment sections have been flooded with calls for justice, while others questioned how someone entrusted with caring for an infant could allegedly commit such a violent act.
Child abuse cases involving infants often generate intense public reaction because the victims are completely defenseless.
