The Woodlands, Texas — A 25-year-old Texas man has been indicted on felony charges after prosecutors allege he secretly slipped an abortion-inducing drug into a pregnant woman’s drink, resulting in the loss of her pregnancy.
According to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, Jon Rueben Gabriel Demeter is accused of administering the drug without the woman’s knowledge or consent in February 2026.
Prosecutors say the woman, who was 14 weeks pregnant at the time, later suffered severe symptoms and delivered a stillborn fetus.
Court documents and investigative reports indicate that Demeter allegedly obtained abortion medication online and administered it by mixing it into a beverage he gave to the woman while she was visiting his residence in The Woodlands.
Investigators say the woman later described the drink as having a “bitter” or unusual taste and became ill within hours. She sought medical attention and was later hospitalized, where she experienced a pregnancy loss.
Authorities allege Demeter had previously attempted to persuade the woman to terminate the pregnancy and had even offered to pay for an abortion procedure out of state.
A Montgomery County grand jury indicted Demeter on two first-degree felony charges: performing an abortion without consent and injury to a child. If convicted, he could face a sentence ranging from five years to life in prison.
Officials say the case is being treated as a significant legal matter under Texas law, which imposes strict penalties for illegal abortion-related conduct.
Demeter was initially arrested in February on charges of aggravated assault and has remained in custody while the case proceeds. He is currently being held without bond.
Authorities say the investigation involved the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office, along with assistance from medical examiners.
Law enforcement officials allege that evidence gathered during the investigation supports the claim that the abortion drug was intentionally administered without the woman’s consent.
The unborn child was reportedly named by the mother following the incident.
The case has drawn attention due to its intersection with Texas abortion laws, which are among the most restrictive in the United States. Prosecutors have suggested the case could be one of the first of its kind to be charged under the state’s current legal framework involving alleged non-consensual abortion drug administration.
Authorities emphasized the seriousness of the allegations.
“This case reflects a deeply disturbing and intentional act,” one law enforcement official said during the investigation, adding that the matter remains ongoing.
Demeter is expected to appear in court for further proceedings later this month. Prosecutors say additional evidence may be presented as the case moves forward.
The investigation is ongoing.
