A South Florida luxury handbag theft investigation has taken another major turn after police arrested a man accused of taking more than $187,000 worth of designer handbags and other belongings connected to social media influencer Coach Stormy Wellington.
According to authorities, 33-year-old Shaquille Jaray Palmer was taken into custody in connection with the case after investigators linked him to several high-end handbags that Wellington reported missing from her home in Miramar.
The case reportedly centers around a collection of luxury items that included Hermès Birkin bags and Chanel merchandise. One of the handbags mentioned in the investigation was reportedly valued at approximately $47,650, showing just how expensive the alleged haul was.
Police say Palmer had access to Wellington’s home because he had been trusted with getting some of the handbags professionally cleaned. Investigators now allege that instead of simply handling the bags for cleaning, Palmer took possession of some of the items and brought them to a business in Aventura that deals with authentic luxury handbags.
According to the arrest report, investigators believe some of the handbags were used as collateral in connection with a loan.
That discovery reportedly became an important part of the investigation.
Police were able to trace some of the designer property back to the business, where investigators allegedly identified handbags that had been reported missing by Wellington.
Palmer reportedly told investigators that he had permission to take the handbags and claimed that some of the items had been serviced. However, according to police, he could not provide a specific timeframe for returning the remaining property.
Authorities ultimately arrested Palmer and charged him with first-degree grand theft involving property valued at $100,000 or more.
The case has already had another unusual development.
Before Palmer’s arrest, Miramar police reportedly arrested the wrong person while investigating the disappearance of the luxury items. That individual was reportedly released after authorities determined that the person was not the suspect they were looking for.
The mistaken arrest added another layer to an investigation that was already attracting attention because of the value of the missing property and Wellington’s large social media following.
Wellington, who is known online for her business and motivational content, reportedly notified authorities after discovering that numerous expensive items were missing from her home.
Luxury handbags can carry enormous resale values, particularly when the bags are limited, rare or highly sought after. Hermès Birkin bags, for example, can sell for tens of thousands of dollars depending on the specific model, materials and condition.
That makes the alleged disappearance of multiple bags a potentially serious financial loss.
According to the latest reporting, the value of the property identified in the investigation was approximately $187,360.80. Earlier reports surrounding the case cited a higher figure, reportedly more than $271,000, as investigators continued examining the missing property.
The changing dollar amount appears to reflect the ongoing investigation and the identification or accounting of additional items.
Police have not established Palmer’s guilt simply by making the arrest. The allegations contained in an arrest report are accusations, and Palmer is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Still, the case raises questions about how someone with access to a person’s home can allegedly gain possession of extremely valuable personal property.
For Wellington, the investigation is also a reminder of just how much money can be tied up in a designer handbag collection.
What started as a report involving missing luxury items has now turned into a criminal case involving an alleged six-figure loss, a luxury resale business, an arrest and an earlier mistaken arrest.
As the legal process moves forward, investigators will likely continue working to determine exactly how many items were taken, where the remaining property went and whether additional people were involved.
For now, Palmer faces the grand-theft charge in connection with the alleged theft, while authorities continue sorting through the details of the case.
