A San Diego County man has been convicted of first-degree murder after authorities say he opened fire on his family members following the relocation of the household Wi-Fi router.
A jury found 61-year-old William Bushey guilty in the August 21, 2024 shooting that killed his sister, Laurie Robinson, and her son, Brett Robinson, and seriously injured his mother, June Bushey, according to court records and prosecutors.
Prosecutors told the court that the violence was triggered after the family temporarily shut off the internet to move the Wi-Fi router from Bushey’s bedroom to his mother’s room. The disruption occurred shortly after Bushey’s sister moved into the home.
Bushey, who family members said spent significant time playing video games, reportedly became enraged by the loss of internet access. Prosecutors also noted he confronted an AT&T technician at the home earlier that day about the service interruption.
Authorities say Bushey later retrieved a shotgun and opened fire inside the home.
Laurie Robinson, 61, was killed.
Brett Robinson, 33, was also killed.
June Bushey, 86, was shot in the chest and hand and survived but suffered severe injuries.
After the attack, Bushey allegedly called 911 and admitted to the shootings. Police found him outside the home with his hands raised.
The prosecution argued the shooting was premeditated, citing Bushey’s access to the firearm and his actions leading up to the incident. Defense attorneys described ongoing family tensions and mental health concerns, but the jury ultimately concluded the killing was intentional and unlawful.
Bushey was convicted of first-degree murder and now faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The case drew significant attention in Point Loma, where neighbors described the family as private but not previously violent. The tragic shooting has sparked conversations about the impact of mental health, family conflict, and gun access in domestic settings.
