Sometimes anger takes over in the worst possible way — and this story is a haunting example of how a simple disagreement can turn deadly.
Charles Leggett, 38, was found guilty this week of first-degree intentional homicide after shooting and killing a store clerk over what he called an “unsanitary” pizza. The shocking incident happened at Action Food and Liquor on October 19, 2024.
According to investigators, Leggett walked into the store around lunchtime and ordered a pizza. When he noticed that the employee preparing it wasn’t wearing gloves, he became furious. Instead of walking away or asking for a refund, he confronted the cashier at the front of the store — 26-year-old Jamil Owies.
What started as a heated argument quickly spiraled out of control. The worker in the back of the store later told police he heard the two men arguing near the entrance, then a single gunshot. When he ran to the front, he found Owies on the ground, struggling to breathe.
Surveillance video confirmed what witnesses described. The footage showed Leggett gesturing angrily, pulling a gun from his pocket, and firing a single shot into Owies’ chest before fleeing the store.
When police questioned him later, Leggett didn’t deny what he’d done. He said he was upset that the pizza maker wasn’t wearing gloves and felt disrespected during the argument. “It was unsanitary,” he told officers, adding that he shot once, ran away, and later threw out the clothes he was wearing.
Now, after being convicted of murder and illegal possession of a firearm, Leggett faces a lifetime in prison — all because of a confrontation that never should have happened.
It’s a grim reminder that anger, when unchecked, can destroy more than just a moment — it can end lives and change families forever.
