A Wisconsin man who killed his wife after accusing her of possibly poisoning him with their cats medication is headed to prison for decades following a deadly domestic dispute that ended in a police standoff.
Chad Haworth, 56, was sentenced to 32 years of initial confinement followed by eight years of extended supervision after pleading guilty to second-degree intentional homicide in the death of his wife, Carmen Haworth, according to reports published October 28, 2026.
The disturbing case unfolded in March 2025 in Hudson, Wisconsin, where police discovered Carmen’s body inside the couple’s townhome after an hourslong standoff with her husband.
Husband Told Police He Suspected Wife Was Poisoning Him
According to the criminal complaint, Haworth contacted police earlier on March 5, 2025, expressing concerns about his wife and accusing her of possibly poisoning him with medication used for their cats.
Haworth reportedly believed his wife was cheating on him and suggested she might be responsible for health problems he was experiencing. However, he acknowledged to an officer that he had no evidence to support his poisoning suspicion.
He reportedly told police that he believed he had developed thyroid problems and planned to visit a doctor.
Later that afternoon, authorities received another call involving Haworth, prompting officers to conduct a welfare check at the couple’s home on Namekagon Street.
During their conversation with police, Haworth reportedly complained that his wife’s alleged boyfriend had accessed his iPhone account and deleted recordings or other information he had saved.
According to investigators, Haworth became increasingly emotional while discussing the situation.
When an officer spoke with him over the phone, Haworth allegedly revealed that his wife was dead, telling police that she was “no longer with us.”
He reportedly said he had snapped after becoming upset over the situation involving his wife and the missing recordings.
Police Discover Wife Dead Inside Townhome
Authorities attempted to get Haworth to leave the residence so they could investigate and check on his wife.
However, according to court documents, he refused to come outside and made statements suggesting he might force officers to shoot him.
Police also became concerned about the possibility of a firearm inside the home, leading to a larger law enforcement response.
The situation developed into an hourslong standoff involving local officers and the St. Croix County Emergency Response Unit.
Authorities eventually used chemical agents inside the residence as they worked to bring the confrontation to an end.
Haworth eventually exited the home and was taken into custody around 6:20 p.m., according to reports detailing the incident.
Once the residence was secured, officers entered and discovered Carmen’s body in an upstairs bedroom. Investigators reported that she had suffered serious knife wounds to her face and neck.
Haworth was arrested and transported to the St. Croix County Jail.
Case Initially Included Multiple Felony Charges
Following the discovery, prosecutors initially charged Haworth with first-degree intentional homicide, mayhem involving a dangerous weapon, and aggravated battery with intent to cause great bodily harm.
The case also raised questions about whether Haworth was competent to stand trial. He was later found competent to face the charges, according to local news reports.
The prosecution ultimately resulted in Haworth pleading guilty to second-degree intentional homicide on July 22, 2026.
On October 27, 2026, Haworth was sentenced to 32 years of initial confinement and eight years of extended supervision, according to Wisconsin news outlet WEAU and reports from Law&Crime.
The sentence marks the latest development in a case that began with a welfare check and ended with a woman dead inside her own home.
Carmen’s death serves as another tragic reminder of how dangerous domestic disputes can become when accusations and conflict escalate into violence.
