A Missouri is now behind bars after he reportedly stabbed his best friend to death for wearing his Kansas City Chiefs shirt.
Trey Parker, 23, was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action, according to court documents. The event took place on Friday while he and his friends were preparing to head to a casino.
LawandOrder reports that Parker was at his residence with the victim and the victim’s mother, as Parker’s mother was hosting a garage sale. When evening arrived and the sale concluded, another man joined Parker and the victim, and they decided to head to a nearby casino.
According to court documents, as the man and the victim’s mother were preparing a vehicle, Parker and the victim started to argue in a nearby parking lot. The disagreement reportedly centered around a sweatshirt that the victim was wearing, which belonged to the suspect.
One of the victims reported that the incident started with shoving, and after entering the vehicle, he stated that he had been stabbed and requested to go to the hospital. The victim, along with his mother and the new arrival, then departed in the vehicle to find the ambulance, according to a detective from the Independence Police Department.
According to the probable cause statement, the victim’s mother made it clear that there was no one else close to her son who could have harmed him except for Parker.
The mother of the suspect shared her perspective on the situation. She reported witnessing the intense argument between the two friends, noting that the victim was clad in Parker’s red Chiefs hoodie and was mocking him with insults.
She allegedly informed authorities that she did not witness her son assault the victim but later learned from him that he had a knife and barely tapped the victim to make him back off, not thinking he inflicted any serious harm. Parker’s mother also reportedly mentioned that her son stayed at home for some time before persuading a friend to drive him to another location.
Authorities examined nearby security footage, which captured portions of the incident. It is reported that Parker approached the victim, and the two faced each other before Parker produced an object and waved it in his right hand.
According to court documents, the suspect then lunged at the victim, lifted his right arm towards him, and stabbed him, with the victim seen immediately afterward clutching his left rib cage.
Police were called shortly after 8 p.m. to a car wash located at the intersection of South Crane and East 23 streets in Independence, where they were informed that paramedics had a stabbing victim on site. The paramedics reportedly informed officers that a male had been dropped off by a vehicle seeking medical help.
He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later declared dead.
Parker was not arrested until Monday. After being read his Miranda rights, he reportedly admitted that he and the victim were “in an argument over a sweatshirt.” He claimed the victim “approached” him “on his property,” stating the victim had a knife and made a “stabbing” and “slashing” motion at him and that he stabbed him in self-defense.
