A Florida man allegedly walked into a hospital looking for trouble — and according to police, things escalated quickly after he allegedly challenged a uniformed officer to a fight.
Ronald Jeffery Johnson, 51, was arrested August 29 following a confrontation at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. The incident later produced a mugshot showing Johnson with a severely swollen and bloodied face.
According to an arrest report cited by authorities, an officer was working an off-duty security detail at the hospital when medical staff requested assistance in the emergency department waiting room.
Police said the officer found Johnson allegedly yelling at medical personnel from across the registration desk. His behavior was reportedly disturbing other patients and creating fear inside the waiting area.
But instead of calming down when the officer arrived, Johnson allegedly redirected his attention toward the cop.
And that’s when police say he made it clear he wasn’t backing down.
“I want to fight you,” Johnson allegedly told the officer.
According to the arrest report, Johnson then charged toward the officer and grabbed him, allegedly resisting the officer’s attempts to get him under control.
The officer reported that a physical struggle followed before he was able to subdue Johnson and place him under arrest. The officer was also injured during the confrontation, suffering a cut to his left hand that required multiple stitches.
Johnson wasn’t exactly walking away from the situation untouched.
Police said he suffered facial injuries during the confrontation and was treated at the same hospital before being medically cleared and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
His booking photograph quickly became one of the most talked-about parts of the story.
The mugshot shows Johnson with significant swelling around his eye and blood visible across his face. Reports also noted that a gloved hand appeared to be supporting him during the booking photograph.
Authorities say Johnson, who is approximately 5-foot-8 and 240 pounds, is now facing several charges stemming from the incident, including aggravated battery on a first responder, resisting an officer with violence, assault on an officer, firefighter or emergency medical technician, and disorderly conduct.
But there was reportedly another problem waiting for Johnson after his arrest.
Authorities discovered he had an outstanding warrant in Georgia connected to an earlier terroristic-threats case. According to reports, that warrant stemmed from an allegation that Johnson failed to appear in court.
Johnson’s Florida case is now moving through the court system. He has been accused of the offenses but has not been convicted of the charges stemming from the hospital confrontation.
For now, the wildest part of the story may be the fact that a situation that reportedly started with Johnson yelling at hospital staff allegedly turned into a physical confrontation with a uniformed officer — after Johnson allegedly told the officer, “I want to fight you.”
And judging from that booking photo, the fight definitely left its mark.
